The Potomac Blue Catfish League

Spring 2025 | Presented by Fish The Potomac & The Tackle Shop
Trade the Kickball Field for the Open River. You’ve mastered Cornhole. You dominate Trivia. It’s time to take your weeknight competition to the water. Join the Potomac Blue Catfish League—the only social sports league in DC where the “field” is the Potomac River, the gear is provided, and the post-game spot is a tackle shop bar.
Overview: The Ultimate Weeknight Escape
This isn’t a guided tour; it’s a competition. But unlike other leagues, you don’t need gear, a boat, or even prior experience. We provide the fleet, the captains, and the tackle. You provide the team spirit and the luck.
- The Mission: Catch the heaviest stringer of Blue Catfish under the lights of the nation’s capital.
- The Vibe: 2 hours of fishing followed by beers, live scoring, and trash talk at The Tackle Shop.
- The Capacity: Strictly limited to 12 Anglers per night (Tuesday or Thursday).
The Three Vessels…

How It Works (The Logistics)
1. The Schedule
- Season Length: 6 Weeks (Starting April 7th).
- Nights: Choose Team Tuesday or Team Thursday.
- Check-In: 5:30 PM Sharp at The Tackle Shop (Don’t be late—the boat leaves without you).
- Competition: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM on the water.
- The Unwind: 8:15 PM – Close (Scores posted & drinks).
2. The “Boat Draw”
To ensure fair play and social mixing, you won’t fish with the same crew every week. At 5:30 PM check-in, all 12 anglers participate in a random Boat Draw to assign your vessel and captain for the night.
3. The Gear
We provide everything:
- 3 World-Class Boats provided by Fish The Potomac.
- Professional Captains to handle navigation and safety.
- All rods, reels, tackle, and bait (Live/Cut bait included).
The Rules: “The Potomac Code”
We play for keeps. The league has shifted to a Weight-Based Scoring System to target the river’s true heavyweights.
- Target Species: Blue Catfish only.
- Scoring: Your score is the Total Weight of your heaviest 3 fish caught that night.
- The Win: The angler with the highest cumulative weight at the end of the 6-week season takes the title.
- The Process: All fish are weighed on certified scales by the Captain, photographed with a dated league token, and released (CPR format).
Registration & The “Roster Spot” Hack
Full Season Entry: $600 Per Angler Includes all 6 weeks, boat seat, captain, fuel, tackle, and bait.
💡 The “Roster Spot” Hack (Split the Cost!) Can’t commit to every Tuesday? Does $600 feel steep? You can split a single “Roster Spot” with a friend for $300 each.
- How it works: You and your partner share one seat. You coordinate who fishes which week.
- The Value: That’s $50 per week for a fully guided boat trip—cheaper than your weekly bar tab. Probably..
The “Post-Game” Unwind
Just like your favorite kickball league, the event doesn’t end when the whistle blows.
- Location: The Tackle Shop (Tournament HQ).
- The Action: Boats return to the dock at 8:15 PM. Captains submit official weight logs. Scores are posted live on the digital leaderboard while you grab a drink.
FAQ (Read Before Booking)
Q: Do I need fishing experience? A: No. Our captains are pros. They handle the boat and the rigging. You just reel them in.
Q: What if it rains? A: We fish rain or shine unless the Captain calls it for safety (lightning/high winds). Bring a jacket.
Q: Can I get a refund if I miss a week? A: No. The $600 fee is non-refundable. If you can’t make it, send a friend to fill your seat (just let us know in advance).
Q: What do I need to bring? A: A valid ID (for check-in and the bar) and weather-appropriate clothing. We provide the rest.
Secure Your Spot
Warning: There are only 12 spots for Tuesday and 12 spots for Thursday. Once they are gone, you are stuck on the waitlist 🙁
