Master the Art of LiveScope: Forward-Facing Sonar Training on the Potomac River
Don’t just watch the screen. Understand it.
Forward-facing sonar has revolutionized the fishing industry. It allows anglers to see fish react to lures in real-time, often called “video game fishing.” However, owning the technology is only half the battle—interpreting the data and keeping your lure in the beam is a skill that takes practice.
At FishThePotomac, we offer specialized LiveScope Training Charters designed to cut your learning curve in half. Whether you want to dial in your own electronics or “try before you buy,” this hands-on clinic will teach you how to turn technology into trophies.
The “Scope” Experience: What to Expect
This is not a traditional fishing charter where you cast blindly at the bank. This is a tactical hunting trip. We use the latest Garmin LiveScope technology to locate specific fish—Bass, Crappie, Stripers, or Catfish—and target them individually.
The Setup
-
Duration: 4 Hours
-
Capacity: Up to 4 Guests
-
Cost: $550 (Flat rate for the boat)
-
Location: Potomac River
The “2-Rod” Approach for Maximum Learning
To ensure the highest quality of instruction, we limit active fishing to 2 rods in the water at a time.
With up to 4 guests on board, we rotate anglers on the bow. This is crucial for two reasons:
-
Screen Clarity: Too many lures create “cross-talk” and clutter on the sonar, making it impossible to learn. Two lines keep the view crisp.
-
Focused Coaching: The Captain can provide 1-on-1 guidance to the active anglers, teaching you exactly how to manipulate the lure based on the fish’s reaction.
What You Will Learn
Our goal is to make you a better angler by the time you step off the boat. During this 4-hour clinic, we cover:
-
Sonar Interpretation: How to distinguish between bait balls, structure, and predatory game fish.
-
Beam Alignment: Mastering the difficult skill of keeping your lure inside the transducer beam during the retrieve.
-
Lure Manipulation: Watching how fish react to different cadences and learning how to trigger a reaction strike.
-
Boat Control: Understanding how boat positioning affects your ability to “scope” effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Who is this trip for?
This trip is perfect for two types of anglers:
-
The Tech-Curious: You are thinking about buying LiveScope but want to see if it’s worth the investment.
-
The New Owner: You already bought the unit, but you’re frustrated because you can’t tell a rock from a bass.
Why do you target “Multispecies”?
Forward-facing sonar works on almost everything. To give you the best learning experience, we target whatever species is most active and aggressive that day. This ensures you get the most “screen time” seeing fish react to your bait.
Can I bring my own gear?
We provide optimized setups that pair perfectly with the lures we use for scoping. However, if you have a specific rod you want to get comfortable with, you are welcome to bring it.
Do we keep the fish?
Our primary goal is education and the sport of the catch. We generally practice Catch and Release on these training trips to maximize fishing time, but retention follows local regulations and seasonal limits.
